Find the Maryland Health Insurance Plans Right for You
Maryland health insurance plans are generally available in several forms but most health care packages are one of three main types. These types include Health Maintenance Organization or HMO plans, PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans and Indemnity benefits plans, each with different benefits and restrictions. Each of these types provides reasonable levels of health coverage for most people, but the packages vary in requirements, approved health providers and premium rate pricing.
With an HMO, only health care received from an authorized network-affiliated health care provider will be covered, and any required specialized care must be referred by a primary physician in order to be a covered service. With a PPO, health care is covered at a higher rate when you use an in-network provider with negotiated, discount network rates, but you may also choose to use out-of-network providers and receive a lower reimbursement of your health care expenses. With an Indemnity type plan, you may use any health care service provider that you wish, and you will be covered for a set level reimbursement of your expenses. Of these different programs, HMO coverage plans will have the lowest premiums, while Indemnity coverage packages are quite comprehensive and come with the highest premium rates.
When choosing from HMO, PPO or Indemnity programs, you should first decide whether your preferred doctors, specialists, labs and hospitals are included in the HMO or PPO provider network. Next, you can decide the level of flexibility you would need in selecting health specialists should the situation arise. Finally, you will want to evaluate the trade-off between having flexibility in choosing doctors, specialists and hospitals versus the much more expensive premium rates associated with more flexibility.
